Stanley Kubrick’s DGA D.W. Griffith Award acceptance speech

And I believe Steven [Spielberg] summed it up about as profoundly as you can. He thought the most difficult and challenging thing about directing a film was getting out of the car.

This quote comes to mind every single time I’m about to shoot something or embark on a creative project of any kind, because it’s so specific and seemingly reductive, yet so universal to the difficulty of making anything: the hardest thing about a project is starting it.

So, at the risk of soapboxing, I propose a mantra for myself and for you, if you have any use for it:

Get out of the car.
